Kangla Fort – The Historic Heart of Manipur Kangla Fort, located in Imphal, is one of Manipur’s most significant historical and cultural landmarks. Once the ancient capital of the Meitei rulers, Kangla served as the seat of power, religion, and administration for centuries. The word “Kangla” means “dry land” in the Meitei language. Surrounded by the Imphal River, the fort is steeped in legends, traditions, and historical events. It was both a royal palace and a sacred site, housing important temples and structures associated with the Meitei kings. During colonial times, Kangla Fort was taken over by the British after the Anglo-Manipur War of 1891, and later by the Assam Rifles. In 2004, it was officially handed back to the Government of Manipur, opening a new chapter in its preservation. Today, Kangla Fort is a heritage complex featuring ancient ruins, reconstructed temples, sacred ponds, and the iconic Kangal Sha (dragon-lion statues) guarding its gates. It has become a cultural hub, symbolizing Manipuri identity and resilience.
